Coulomb's Law and Force Analysis

The Coulomb's Law and Force Analysis Video Tutorial steps through the solution to four difficult physics problems involving Coulomb's Law. The problems blend critical thinking, strong conceptual understanding, solid algebra skills, and the use of right-angle trigonometry.

The video lesson answers the following questions:

  1. How can Coulomb’s Law be combined with vector physics and algebra to conduct a force analysis of an electrostatic phenomenon?

Additional and Related Learning Tools

The Calculator Pad - Static Electricity Chapter
When it's time to practice solving Physics word problems, you'll get plenty of it at our Calculator Pad. You will find problems, answers, and audio-guided solutions. What more could you ask for? There's over 30 problems here, many of which require the use of Coulomb's Law.

Minds On Physics the App, Part 4, Missions SE8 and SE9 in the Static Electricity Module
Minds On Physics includes interactive questioning modules that provide a rigorous workout in careful reading, analytical thinking, and conceptual reasoning. Mission SE8 and SE9 from our Static Electricity module is all about Coulomb's Law. Put on your work-out clothes and get started.

Physics Interactives, Static Electricity Chapter, Electric Force Simulation
This simulation allows you to alter the quantity of charge on two charged objects, to drag them around and change their separation distance, and to observe the force of attraction and repuslion. Now that's Coulomb's Law in action.

Physics Classroom Tutorial, Static Elecricity Chapter
Sometimes you need a written reference to freshen up on what you're learning. And that written reference would be the Tutorial section of our website. The following two pages will be helpful complements to this video:
Coulomb's Law
Newton's Laws and the Electrical Force

Teacher Resources

Curriculum Corner, Static Electricity Section
Our Curriculum Corner is composed of a collection of Think Sheets. Each one makes for a great component of any Lesson Plan. They work great for both independent practice exercises and cooperative group exercises. The following Think Sheet makes a great complement to this video:
Coulomb's Law

The Calculator Pad - Static Electricity Chapter
When it's time to practice solving Physics word problems, students will get plenty of it at our Calculator Pad. They will find problems, answers, and audio-guided solutions. What more could one ask for?

Minds On Physics the App, Part 4, Missions SE8 and SE9 in the Static Electricity Module
Minds On Physics is not for the meek-hearted. They are interactive questioning modules that provide a rigorous workout in careful reading, analytical thinking, and conceptual reasoning. Missions SE8 and SE9 from our Static Electricity module pertain to Coulomb's Law

Coulomb's Law Concept Builder
Coulomb's Law can be used as a guide to thinking about how a change in one variable effects other variables. This Concept Builder will give you plenty of chances to do that type of thinking.

Physics Interactives, Static Electricity Chapter, Electric Force Simulation
This simulation allows students to alter the quantity of charge on two charged objects, to drag them around and change their separation distance, and to observe the force of attraction and repuslion. And like most our simulations, there's a classroom-ready activity sheet available if needed.

Physics Classroom Tutorial, Static Elecricity Chapter
It reads like a book ... but much better. Our Tutorial section has long been the most trafficked section of our website. And for good reason - it's understandable. We recommend leaving links to specific pages on your Course page. The following pages will be helpful complements to this video:
Charge Interactions Revisited
Coulomb's Law

Teacher Toolkit: Coulomb's Law
Teacher Toolkits provide teachers with a collection of resources that are ideal for planning standards-based, multimedia lessons and units. We've combed the web and selected some of the best, most professional simulations, videos, and other tools that complement the resources present at The Physics Classroom.
