Physics Classroom is making strides to make our site accessible to everyone. Our site contains 6 navigation areas. The Primary, Secondary, and Page Level navigations have a screen reader version of their nav structure that allows using the left and right keys to navigate sibling navigation items, and up or down keys to navigate parent or child navigation items. The others can be navigated using tabs. The Primary Navigation handles the first 2 levels of site pages. The Secondary (which is not always available) handles the 3rd and 4th level of structure. The Page level navigation allows you to navigate the current page's headings quickly. The Header Navigation contains the Light/Dark Mode toggle, Search, Notifications and account login. The Breadcrumb Navigation contains the breadcrumb of the current page. If the current page has a breadcrumb, you can get to it by skipping to the content and tabbing in reverse (shift plus tab). The Footer Navigation contains links such as Privacy, Contact, about and terms. Some resources contain an Audio Player that can be activated by holding down the T key for 3 seconds, and then using K to pause and resume. While not every area of Physics Classroom is usable purely from keyboard and screen reader, we are committed to continue work on making this possible. If you have questions or need additional help, please use this link to contact us.

Minds On - Matter

The Matter Minds-On module consists of various missions (assignments) that address such topics as Matter. The missions and the corresponding objectives are listed below. Tap a mission's name to begin.

Activities

Mission CM1 Solids-Liquids-Gases

Mission CM1 pertains to states of matter and state transitions. The mission consists of 28 questions organized into 7 Question Groups.

Mission CM2 Mixtures vs Pure Substances

Mission CM2 pertains to the classification of matter. Students must understand the distinctions between pure substances and mixtures, between elements and compounds, and between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.

Mission CM3 Chemical and Physical Properties

Mission CM3 pertains to chemical and physical properties. Students must be able to distinguish between these two types of properties. The mission consists of 24 questions organized into 6 Question Groups.

Mission CM4 Chemical and Physical Changes

Mission CM4 pertains to the distinction between chemical and physical changes. The mission consists of 28 questions organized into 7 Question Groups.

Mission CM5 Periodic Table of Elements

Mission CM5 pertains to the periodic table. Students must be comfortable with the organization of the table, including the group number, period, and atomic number; the metals, nonmetals, and metalloids; and the most common families of elements. The mission consists of 36 questions organized into 9 Question Groups.

Mission CM6 Elements versus Compounds

Mission CM6 pertains to elements and compounds. Students must be able to distinguish between the various representations of elements and compounds. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.

Mission CM7 Verbal Descriptions of Matter

Mission CM7 pertains to the use of words like atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds to describe a sample of matter. Students must relate words describing a sample of matter to simple formulae and particle diagrams. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.

Mission CM8 Using a Formula to Describe Matter

Mission CM8 pertains to the use of chemical formulae. Students must translate a description of matter in words or as a particle diagram into a set of chemical formulae. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.

Mission CM9 Counting Atoms

Mission CM9 assesses students’ ability to count the number of atoms of an element in a formula. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.

Mission CM10 Density

Mission CM10 pertains to density. Students must express an understanding of density as a ratio of mass to volume. The mission consists of 32 questions organized into 8 Question Groups.
